The real life Hobbit house

23 September 2011

Simon Dale has built a life-sized hobbit house in the middle of a Welsh hillside.

The wooden eco home was created as a result of frustrating mortgage repayments, was erected in only four months and cost only £3,000.

Simon received the land the house was built on for free in return for looking after the surrounding woods and also sourced much of the material from the land as well.

The eco house, dug into a hill, features other green features such as a compost toilet, solar power and was built using lime plaster instead of cement.

Having no architectural experience, Simon learnt how to do everything himself resulting in a unique and environmentally friendly property tailored to suit family needs.
