William Lyttle or ‘Mole Man’, a retired civil engineer, spent 40 years building a series of tunnels underneath his Hackney property. The tunnels ran eight metres deep and 20 metres long. His tunnelling even once caused him to knock out the power supply of the opposite street.

Mr Lyttle died aged 79, in 2010 leaving a bill of approximately £408,000 for his eccentric hobby and the property underneath which he tunnelled is soon to be auctioned off.

The property will go under the hammer in July and comes with planning permission to demolish the existing structure, replacing it with two town houses.

Sean King, Director at Move with Us commented that: 'Putting the property up for auction is the best option to achieve the maximum property price'.

'We expect lots of interest in the sale. The property is prime real estate in Hackney with the added cachet of being the 'Mole Man's former house.'
