Peninsula of Samana
The exotic natural beauty of the Peninsula of Samana, located in the Northeast portion of the Dominican Republic, is now being embraced by people throughout the World due to the opening of the El Catey International Airport. The shores of the peninsula are lined by unspoiled bays with white sandy beaches, palm forests and Mangroves attracting all kinds of bird life.
Inland lies majestic mountains which are sparsely developed and difficult to reach. There you will find hidden waterfalls, various species of exotic birds, wild Orchids and Bromeliads thriving in the tropical vegetation of the rain forests. The Alain Henri Liogier National Park was created to protect a large portion of this wonderful natural environment for the enjoyment of all.
Santa Barbára de Samaná
The small, calm seaport of Samana (Santa Barbára de Samaná) with its 50,000 inhabitants, is situated on the southern shore of the picturesque Bay of Samana. Fishing boats and ferries anchor peacefully next to tourist tour boats and international sailing yachts at the new harbour and Marina. This harbour is the starting point for all the Whale watching tour boats.
Samana Bay is a world famous sanctuary for the Humpback whales. During December to March, they come to mate and give birth to their young ones. Samana offers great diversity. Enjoy the small bays and islands with sandy beaches, aquatic sports, tours, and Lomo de Chivo golf course, nestling in its own hilly tropical garden. Three new large golf courses are planned in and around Samana area.
Near the harbour there are numerous international restaurants, as well as bars and discotheques. The town is the capital of the providence of Samana and includes governmental offices, clinics, banks, supermarkets and small shops.
